The Hovercraft Transporters

At Morecambe the normal launch site is a slipway adjacent to the I.L.B boathouse, the hovercraft is housed in a temporary building (fig 1) a few hundred yards away from the main boathouse and therefore it has to be transported by road to the slipway.

When we get a call to the River Lune it is quicker to travel the four miles by road than go all the way round by sea, this can also apply to calls to casualties on the tidal road between Overton and Sunderland Point.

We have also identified launch and recovery sites around Morecambe Bay that can be used in case of adverse weather conditions ether for launching or if there are problems returning to the boathouse the Transporter will be dispatched to these sites for recovery.

The first method of transport was a trailer and Land Rover, (fig 2) this was used until the first purpose built Transporter (HT001) was delivered on April 22nd 2003 this was in service until December 16th 2003 when it was replaced by a new design HT002 which is still being evaluated and is proving to be a lot quicker and easier than HT001 which is now used for Hovercraft H001 at Poole.
