THE HURLEY FLYER

The first RNLI hovercraft named in honour of

Mrs Kay Hurley MBE

Mrs Hurley from Oxfordshire approached the RNLI with a view to making a donation, after meeting with RNLI representatives from Poole and being shown various options she decided to fund the first operational Hovercraft. The RNLI and Morecambe in particular will always be indebted to her.   

The NAMING CEREMONY & SERVICE OF DEDICATION

The naming ceremony and service of dedication took place at Morecambe Lifeboat Station on the Central  Promenade Morecambe on Saturday the 31st  May 2003 after been put into service on the 23rd December 2002.

The proceedings were opened by Mr Ken Toole Chairman of Morecambe Station Branch, Mr Steve Henderson Divisional Engineer then described the Hovercraft. Mrs Kay Hurley MBE handed the craft over to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, Sir John James KCVO CBE accepted on the Institutes behalf, he then handed it over to Morecambe Branch for use of Morecambe Lifeboat Station it was accepted by Mr John Beaty Morecambe Lifeboat Operations Manager.

After a Service of Dedication led by The Reverend Susan Chambers, Mr Harry Roberts Hovercraft Commander proposed a Vote of Thanks. Mrs Kay Hurley MBE then named the Hovercraft The Hurley Flyer.

Music was provided by Morecambe Salvation Band.
